Drew Barrymore is coming to daytime television. CBS has announced that the 44-year-old actress will be hosting a new talk show starting in the fall of 2020, and the network believes that the show is the “brightest prospect” they have seen in years.
Chief Operating and Financial Officer of CBS Global Distribution Group, Steve LoCascio, says that Barrymore is a “huge star and a breath of fresh air,’ and her show will “energize any station’s lineup.” The President of CBS Television Stations, Peter Dunn, agrees, saying that the network is excited to be in business with the actress and they look forward to giving Barrymore their full support to “help this show strike gold with our audience and advertisers.”
“It is beyond my wildest dreams to have this opportunity for a daily talk show,” Barrymore said in a statement. “I’m truly thrilled and honored to be creating this show with CBS.”
According to Entertainment Tonight, Barrymore shot the pilot for the talk show in New York back in August after she wrapped up her three-year run on Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet. While the format of the show is still unknown, it is confirmed that Barrymore will be both the host and the executive producer.
Back in 2016, Barrymore discussed a talk show deal with Warner Bros, but she never shot a pilot and the project eventually fizzled out.
The daytime talk genre has really seen a renaissance in recent years reminiscent of the 1990s talk show boom. Barrymore will be joining a star-studded market that includes Ellen DeGeneres, Kelly Clarkson, Wendy Williams, and Tamron Hall. Nick Cannon will also be launching his own syndicated talk show in 2020.
Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray, The Doctors, The Talk, and The View are also still going strong in the daytime market, along with legal shows like Hot Bench and Judge Judy and game shows The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy!.
While Drew Barrymore will be busy preparing for her new show in the next few months, she is also the executive producer of the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, which hits theaters on November 15th.
