Bernie Sanders underwent heart surgery and canceled Democratic presidential primary events according to a statement his campaign released on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. At 78-years-old, the Vermont senator remains the oldest presidential candidate, followed by Joe Biden. As both Sanders and Biden have come under intense scrutiny for their advanced age, many are asking if either is healthy enough to take on the oval office. If Bernie Sanders remains in the presidential race and were to win, he would be 83-years-old by the time he finished serving his first term.
Senior campaign advisor Jeff Weaver released a statement on Wednesday describing the incident.
“During a campaign event yesterday evening, Senator Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted. Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”
Former President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 95th birthday on October 1, 2019, and recently stated that he wouldn’t have been able to handle the presidential office after the age of 80.
Now that Bernie Sanders has two stents, he will need to focus on his health and remain calm and stress-free. It is up for debate whether Senator Sanders will be healthy enough to continue on the road to the Democratic nomination. Though Senator Sanders is said to be in good spirits, he will need to maintain a healthy environment that will promote healing.
Bernie Sanders has canceled all events indefinitely.
What do you think about Bernie Sanders and his run for the Democratic presidential nomination? Do you think he is too old to continue on the campaign trail? Do you think there should be an age limit set in place for those who want to be president? Senator Sanders isn’t the only one drawing concern about age and effectiveness as president. While Bernie Sanders is 78, President Donald Trump is 74. Some are also asking if President Donald Trump is too old to be elected for a second term as he would be 78-years-old at the end of his term if re-elected. What do you think? Are Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump too old to be president in 2020?
